Not so easy, though thats the answer I would have given to another person asking the same question I noticed that it was a bit loose a week or so back
and tightened it myself, used a ratchet ringie to do it up nice and tight, now I have to decide between doing the motor that I have or replacing it.

Hope you didn't go too tight and strip the thread - easily done.
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

you haven't painted the sump plate? This happen to my crumpledore lucky I caught it in time (only after 300k break in run ), then the water pump pulley bolts came loose as well as few other
bits.
It came down to the paint. You see paint is rubbery to some degree and even though its tight the paint would soften from heat and the pressure would
squeeze it out slowly and therefore the gap
between the bolt head and surface would slightly increase and make to bold come loose.
I just cleaned the paint off around the bolt hole and head re tightened it and problem solved. Realizing this I checked all other repainted surfaces
and sure enough they were loose
Just a thought.

No paint, deep sump (alloy) no striped thread in fact when we found the sump plug, about 3 k's back up the road at a rest stop in a puddle of oil I
found that it was pretty damned hard to screw back in, I figure it was all but out when I crossed off the road onto the rest stop area, I heard a bit
of a scrape as I crossed the drain at the edge of the road and that must have been the bit that took it out as there was damage to the thread in the
sump only on the last bit of thread.

Sorry to hear of your loss....
It's probably worthwhile to safety-wire the new one.

You can bet thats gunna happen Peter, where does the wire go to, another bolt?, I have already designed a plate to fit around the sump plug which I
was going to fit to another bolt in the round plate that the sump plug is fitted to but sounds like I may be reinventing the wheel.

Just search for 'safety wire' in Google or similar and you'll get more information than you can eat. In summary, you can drill the sump plug
yourself, then wire it to and convenient point and twist it up tight. Often used on aircraft, as the consequences of the propeller falling off are
kind of terminal.
